The real deal about choosing hybrids or electric vehicles

This is the second part of a series devoted to Electric cars and Hybrids that are slowly trickling into the local market. Here's a quick guide on how to choose one for yourself, if you're thinking of getting one! Just remember that it still has a carbon foot print and still has an environmental impact. The real deal about choosing hybrids or electric vehicles is vital for all motorist who need to know the "RAW FACTS". All the unedited and nitty gritty facts that everyone should know.

FACT# 1 Not all hybrids and EVs are the same!
Why? All manufacturers have the same technology but have a different set of requirements and priorities! Even with claims of EVs that can do 500 kilometers on one full car, is not the same for all brands. For example, Euro EVS tend to have battery power and more distance per charge. Japanese and Chinese cars are on a different level, but can approximate Euro EVS or Hybrids in performance.

FACT# 2 Hybrids and EVs are the next best option for motorists.
Why? No. The combustion engine still offers that best performance. Though hybrids and EVs are catching up, with improved tech. Even with the extra added horsepower of the electric motor, it needs power to complement the gas component. Especially the regenerative braking system that need constant motion recharge the battery.

FACT# 3
Hey don’t worry, we got your spare battery when it needs replacing! We’ve got you back covered….
Why? All manufacturers have a stockpile of EV car batteries but it is controlled by supply and demand! It will cost to replace it, hopefully under warranty. China is the source of most supplies and Chinese electric car makers may have the most supplies. Many car makers buy raw supplies for their own batteries, and Chinese cars are making headway!

FACT# 4 Tesla is the best EV available and beats other EVs.
Why? This is false and those under this impression are misinformed! Many brands like Porsche, BMW and Volvo are producing EVs with fast acceleration and range to rival or better Tesla’s models.

FACT# 5 It’s a good time to buy a hybrid or EV in the Philippines because of high fuel prices.
Why? There is a lot to prepare and the cost of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) is expensive. It’s a lot of jive by online magazines that choose to omit this fact. Even in other countries it cost to own one, plus getting the home EVSE to charge is expensive to install!

FACT# 6 Electric vehicles and hybrids aren’t always up to date. Old models aren’t as efficient as new ones.

Why?
Though EVs are simpler than hybrids, they aren’t as developed as gas powered cars. In fact, the main difference of EVs and hybrids are the car chassis that are used. One maybe the electric skateboard design or something similar. It all boils down to performance, like a Nissan Leaf does have differences from its newer version.

Joining the EV and hybrid bandwagon is the next step, though these factors will play a big part whether you get it or not! Car technology evolves but it should be known what are the major considerations as car buyer. Do you or do you not? Hybrids are mid step and EVs are a full plunge. Are you ready to ditch your old gas engine powered car? And join the bandwagon.

  1. You'll be more than happy that there's a hybrid version of the Toyota Cross in 2020. Hopefully it delivers. eCompareMo probably wrote something about it. https://www.ecomparemo.com/
